I wrote two drabble treats for the Season of Drabbles Spring Round, both FFVII. I am working on at least three FFVII longer pieces and spinning my wheels a bit so it was helpful to actually finish something, omg - and I don't normally write this short! Also fun picking characters I haven't written before.

I have reached that predictably familiar part of the year when I am procrastinating on my Yuletide assignment. This time I actually picked up a pinch hit for an entirely different exchange, and wrote 5K of KJ Charles' fashion lesbians in 1920s Paris:

Dites-moi (5300 words) by Cyphomandra
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Will Darling Adventures - K. J. Charles
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Maisie Jones/Phoebe Stephens-Prince
Characters: Maisie Jones (The Will Darling Adventures), Phoebe Stephens-Prince
Additional Tags: Get Together, 1920s, Paris (City), Fashion & Couture, Excessive usage of the word "darling" (consistent with canon)

Summary:

"I do like a woman with clever fingers."

Phoebe Stephens-Prince, Slippery Creatures

I am extremely grateful to my sister for conveniently having rented an apartment in the right bit of Paris that I could borrow, complete with photos, and I only wish I'd had more time and been able to work in Pat & Fen from Charles' linked England series (I nearly got there - Graham, although an original character, was going to be my bridge).

I have also done two other stories this year:

The woods are lovely, dark and deep (554 words) by Cyphomandra
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stardew Valley (Video Game)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Leah/Female Player (Stardew Valley)
Characters: Leah (Stardew Valley), Marnie (Stardew Valley), Emily (Stardew Valley), Jas (Stardew Valley)
Additional Tags: Treat, something nasty in the woods, Horror

Summary:

Once you get past the outer layers, the true nature starts to show...

I wrote this about 2 hours before reveals after [personal profile] rachelmanija encouraged people to add treats, and it was a lot of fun. Basically I typed "Not all Stardew Valley’s festivals appear on the calendar" and then wrote a story about something entirely different, but with (hopefully) the same unnerving undercurrent.

Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Original Work
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Injured WWI Soldier/His Bellringer Friend
Characters: Injured WWI soldier, Bellringer Friend
Additional Tags: Recovery, campanology, wwi

Summary:

"and although we are not better for it,
they tell you to go. And you do."

Ringing the Bells, Anne Sexton.

I need to fix the formatting on this, because I don't think my idea of having different fonts for the two timelines works. Anyway. WWI, bells, and a strained, secret relationship. I struggled with this piece quite a bit initially, although I'm mostly happy with the result.

I have a short story published! Gulls and Snails and Quokka Tails in the His Magical Pet anthology for Outright International put together by the amazing [personal profile] rachelmanija. It is set firmly in New Zealand Aotearoa on an island that owes quite a bit to Stephens Island, the conservation reserve in the Marlborough Sounds (including the name, te reo for "around the tower"). It features a reluctant tour guide, a visiting naturalist, and talking gulls, carnivorous snails, and a slightly lost quokka. I had a lot of fun writing it. The rest of the collection and the sister anthology, Her Magical Pet, also look fantastic.

Link to collection on Amazon.

I had a fabulous Chocolate Box! I received three gifts, all great:

I don’t seem to have written much about them on here, but Antonia Forest’s Marlows series (10 books about the same family, published over 34 years but covering a little over two years in book time, with each book roughly contemporary with its publication date) are hugely important to me as a reader and as a person; they are stunningly well-written, brilliant on character and, unfortunately, difficult and expensive to find. I re-read them frequently and always find something worthwhile (I’m reading Lucy Mangan’s memoir Bookworm at the moment, and it’s great to see her similar enthusiasm).

The fic I got is totally in keeping with canon, a post-series talk between Nicola (mostly the series protagonist, although she’s largely absent in The Thuggery Affair) and her adored older brother Giles, who is now fallen from grace. It’s great on character and on casting a new light back at events of the series, and at showing that Nicola is growing up, and the balance between her and Giles is starting to tip. Also, bonus naval details.

"That long line of naval officers, all with their happy ships..."

The name "Marlow" has been a powerful talisman in the Royal Navy for generations. What would it take for that name to change from a blessing to a curse?

On the eve of Nicola Marlow's departure for Britannia Royal Naval College, she and her brother Giles talk.

I nominated a few original prompts and got two amazing stories:

I’m still working through the archive, but there’s a lot of great fiction and art there, and I hope to come back with some more recs.

For my own assignment I matched with [personal profile] thisbluespirit on Sid Halley and his father-in-law Charles Roland from Dick Francis, which I’d seen in the tagset and been very much taken with. I re-read Odds Against and Whip Hand for inspiration (I have these in a double edition that inexplicably published them in the wrong order, so the first time I read them I was quite confused) and read Come to Grief for the first time and thought it was fantastic. However, all the ideas I was getting were a) novel-length and b) required quite a bit of horse-research. So I went back to [personal profile] thisbluespirit’s prompts, and saw that she’d also nominated Sapphire and Steel, a canon I love dearly but have never written for, and found this important footnote - “I never not want random fantastical stuff in my mundane canons and having sensible people deal with the ridiculous in whatever way works for them.” So I had my concept. I rewatched some Sapphire and Steel and thought about time, and places and objects, and ended up with ships and bells.

I had my usual problems getting the start right - I had quite a bit of Sid riding in (and losing) a race based on the Carlisle Bell, the oldest British horse race (tweaked to make it jump rather than flat), and then a few chunks of Charles unconscious in hospital while Sid went back to Aynsford and encountered strange individuals, and then the deadline loomed over me like an iceberg and I finally found my way in. Many, many thanks to my betas, especially [personal profile] sovay who had less than 24 hours to look at it.

I pounced on a pinch hit for [personal profile] lirin_lirilla in the [community profile] genex fic exchange because it had so many fabulous prompts that I could do (Oxford Time Travel! Mara Jade in the Star Wars EU! Psmith) and ended up writing for Narnia, a series which was probably my gateway into reading past picture book level, and certainly my gateway into fantasy. I have loved all of the books except The Last Battle (which I will never love) for different reasons at different times, but never thought of writing fic for them, so it was both a challenge and a process of discovery at working out what I wanted to say.

Brief story notes. )

[personal profile] sovay had posted recently about seeing the film of The Night Mail as part of a train film marathon, so that was still in my head when I was looking for titles/epigraphs, and she very kindly provided beta, along with [personal profile] china_shop and Orannia. [personal profile] sovay has also written a fabulously evocative piece of Calormene history and archeology off the back of my mention of the Assyrian lion hunt sculpted reliefs at the British Museum, and I strongly recommend it; Not a Tame Lion.

[personal profile] china_shop mentioned helpfully that [community profile] seeingcolorcomm were looking for pinch hits, including in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so I wandered over to take a look. And then pounced on the first one I saw. I'd been thinking about a Finn backstory piece anyway, I had the novelisation out from the library; all I had to do was resist the urge to write T'Challa backstory instead, which was surprisingly tempting given that all I know of canon is the Civil War movie. (and then all I had to do was write it in three days and badger [personal profile] china_shop into betaing).

It's not my most cheerful piece ever (off-stage genocide etc) but I enjoyed writing it. I wanted to sort out Finn's past in my own head, and I wanted to provide some sort of explanation as to how the Republic is apparently unaware of the First Order's main base, and this is one possible explanation. I've never done a pinch hit before, mainly because I haven't really thought of them outside the Yuletide context, and I'm always working on my main story right up until the final deadline (ahem). I really enjoyed doing it, though, and will keep an eye out for more in the future.

This year I wrote Somehow, for The Decemberists’ song The Bagman’s Gambit. I did so with the help of three fabulous betas, whom I can now name – [personal profile] china_shop and [identity profile] rhuia.livejournal.com encouraged me through the whole thing and sent me very helpful feedback (next time I write a story I am giving [personal profile] china_shop all my commas in advance, so she doesn’t have to rearrange them later) and [personal profile] lightgetsin did an heroic last minute American beta and readthrough in response to my pathetic appeal less than 48 hours before the collection opened. Thanks again to you all for your extremely necessary assistance.

Lengthy writing notes and citations, with spoilers (for the story, not the citations). )
