I heard on Thursday that all of us in my town house complex had access to our houses again, so I biked that way after work and ended up going in, as there were a) others there and b) I am still carrying a maglite torch in my work bag (it was dark by the time I got there). At least three of the 14 houses in the complex have been broken into, although mine is fortunately not one of them. More books, bookcases and manga have come down in the June aftershocks, and the whole top floor feels uneven (it's carpeted, but if I could drop a bag of marbles on it I expect they would all bounce in very odd directions - you can feel hills and dips just by walking over it). However, given that my immediate neighbours have had a major water tank leak, with the ceiling sagging so much that it's split, and all the soft furnishings soaked and beginning to mildew, I'm fortunate again that it's not worse.
The land has not been inspected, there's no power or sewerage, and no-one can live there until these things are sorted out (with no timeline), but at least I can start going through stuff.
In other news, I have finished Final Fantasy II, which was good but slightly traumatic. There's a bit where one of your pixelated characters sinks to her knees, and starts reciting all the people who've joined your group only to die heroically, and man, it's a considerable list. Leila, a pirate captain, manages to survive when she gets separated from the group when the rest of you get swallowed by a giant whale (thus ensuring I had the Decemberists' Mariner's Revenge Song stuck in my head the WHOLE DAY), and it's noticeable that when she sees you again she expresses relief that you're alive, but shows absolutely no interest in rejoining your group, which seems very sensible. There is also a bit where you head back into a previously lively town to find only a small child wandering around reciting "dead... they're all dead", which is only counteracted slightly by the bit where I was hacking my way through a dungeon of assorted enemies only to open a door and find a bunch of beavers swimming round a nice icy pool making chirruping noises. Fortunately, one of your party speaks beaver (when he stepped forward to offer to interpret I was going, "what? what?"), and is able to negotiate access to useful things on your behalf.
Also, there are way too many trap rooms, so I ended up using walkthroughs to prevent myself throwing the phone at anything. I am still working on FFI but will then run out of convenient iphone portable versions. I now have FFVII on the PS3, but am having trouble getting the save slots to work, ensuring any attempt at the game will end abruptly and painfully. Plus, I am slowly progressing through ME2, which is fascinating even when I end up staring up at a corner of the ceiling again while trying to shoot something.
