I have to thank you for putting me onto them, and onto SSBB in general! (One of my old LJ friends, who is pretty much no longer on LJ but I keep in touch with via FB these days, used to mod it - I don't think she's involved any more, but I used to beta-read her stories for it. But I hadn't actually looked at it in ages.) I am really enjoying looking at the older stories, and contemplating writing some original fiction myself, now - something that I hadn't even thought I might be able to do.
I particularly adored The White Palace (right up my alley!), The Stone Fox etc, and Murder Ballad. I have also enjoyed works by other authors, especially The City of a Thousand Days by Ogiwara Saki.
Contemporary m/m really doesn't do it for me, unless there is a paranormal or fantasy element. (This is true, really, for all types of media I like - I'm a fan of historical, SF, or fantasy stories/movies/etc, but I find 'ordinary people in contemporary situations' boring!) I think sineala reviewed Warriors of Rome recently - yeah, I just went and looked at her review; her favorite was The Left Hand of Calvus, but I remember reading her review and thinking that no, this collection didn't interest me.
