cyphomandra: fractured brooding landscape (grass by durer)

My dream last night ran into budgetary constraints, or something similar - my group of, obviously, law-abiding citizenry were fleeing on skis from a bunch of evil people in helicopters, with lots of vertical jumps and some very nice scenery; when we ran out of snow the chase sequence switched to trains, with high speed collisions and a slow-motion replay to establish that one of the characters had been able to jump clear just in time. And then all of us were in a very unexciting suburb from my childhood, hanging out on opposite sides of the road and glaring at each other while waiting to see whose bus would arrive first.

Anyway. Garth Nix is, fortunately, not running out of invention, although this is still not as good as the first book.
The sixth and next-to-last of the Keys to the Kingdom series. One of the motifs I like in fantasy is the way power, especially magical power, corrupts – Frodo and the ring, the second chronicles of Thomas Covenant – and it’s happening here, as Arthur’s continuing use of magic makes him less than half-human. This changes his looks and his abilities, but also his personality; he loses his temper much faster, and has to grapple with the sense of entitlement that this has also given him. Interesting to see. I will have to re-read them all before the next one comes up, as I expect twists and reverses in the final volume. It will also be interesting to see how long it is.
