PSA - on October 27th, the British Library are playing the first half hour of the Dark is Rising audio adaptation, followed by Susan Cooper herself, in conversation with Natalie Haynes. I am not going to this because a) I am in Denmark and b) by the time I found out about it all the in person tickets had gone (otherwise I would have been trying to work out how to get back) BUT you can buy on-line tickets for £6.50 and these will give you the right to watch the recording for up to 48 hours afterwards - here - which I have now done.
This is the launch weekend for the British Library's Fantasy: Realms of Imagination exhibition, with numerous other interesting events (I am particularly tempted by the Aliette de Bodard & Adrian Tchaikovsky discussion on world-building). I will definitely be going to the exhibition at some stage but will need to work out when.

Date: 2023-10-19 11:52 am (UTC)(also, I am going to France after Denmark and we will be in Rennes for a bit before heading to Puy du Fou, which is a French historical theme park that looks totally dramatic in all the best ways. Any tips for Rennes?)

Date: 2023-10-24 05:29 pm (UTC)The Rennes old city center is extremely nice. It's the part with cobblestone streets, walking distance from the train station. (Don't miss the bizarre skeletal horse statue outside the train station.) It's got great sandwich and crepe places, some really nice restaurants, and a giant three-story manga store! All my recs will be for that area.
On the street that has Fromagerie Vasselot with a cow outside, there is a nearby honey shop. It does free samples. The award-winning honey with sea salt is absolutely incredible. Get a jar to take back home. On the same street, there's a little market, a terrific sandwich place, and an equally terrific bakery. Get sandwiches and pastries and have a picnic.
On a different street (across the main road) is a fantastic little restaurant called Chez Michel. It's a one-man operation with a seasonal menu and it's incredible.
Hotel Balthazar has a restaurant with a tasting menu that's fancy and excellent.
In day trips, St Michel was very cool but be careful not to miss the bus back. Malo was a bit meh - extremely touristy.
