cyphomandra: boats in Auckland Harbour. Blue, blocky, cheerful (boats)

You are the first other person I've met who's read that! I have a secondhand paperback copy and one other fantasy of hers called Aquarius (1982) and I've never read anything else. What are her realist books like?

I've mainly read her early stuff; Thunder and Lightnings - two boys bond over a shared love of planes, Hairs in the Palm of the Hand - dryly funny school stories, and Handles, of which I remember nothing but the concept behind the title, but they're all good solid realist children's fiction, which did not prepare me at all for The Ennead. My high school library had rather nice hardbacks of The Ennead and Divide and Rule, which is a remarkably cynical look at belief and religion (the protagonist must serve out a year as a Chosen religious figure despite the views he has previously expressed about said religion) and I read them together - they and Sylvia Engdahl's Heritage of the Star, which I read around the same time, all affected me greatly. I haven't read Aquarius!

Her Eclipse of the Century came out in 1999 and is a book I keep meaning to go back to - I liked it a lot, it was doing a lot of interesting and different things, but I wasn't a teenager when I read it and it didn't have quite the same effect.
