cyphomandra: boats in Auckland Harbour. Blue, blocky, cheerful (boats)
This lj has been a bit of a wash as far as book reviews go this year, for which I blame the earthquakes and my own highly efficient procrastination techniques. Anyway, it has occurred to me that I can use this for other things, hence the intermittent gaming notes (finished FFVII. Loved it. Currently racing chocobos on an earlier save and wondering about taking on the Diamond and Emerald WEAPONS, which completely wiped out earlier parties when I absent-mindedly wandered into them). So. Assorted irks.

Starting with book-related things – the iOS5 update kills Stanza (much thanks and sympathies to Orannia for letting me know from her own experience before I installed it!). I love Stanza, it's my main ereading platform, I don't like the alternatives I've tried anywhere near as much, and I am very very grumpy at the idea that I'm going to lose it for what appear to be internal politicking reasons (see here for more details, plus appropriate comparisons to heroin addicts suddenly deprived of their syringes. There's already a Facebook petition). I also need to know how to delete the update I downloaded before I knew this, as otherwise it'll try and update itself the next time I lose power to the desktop and reboot – any suggestions?

Anyway. While I still have Stanza, I've been reading, and I'm supposed to be giving a talk on m/m romance in a fortnight so I bought another dozen or so ebooks for research purposes and have been bouncing through them. This is where I discuss the ones that aren't working for me.

Hmm. I should also say that I read all of Heidi Cullinan's Dance with Me within about two hours of downloading it, and really enjoyed it, and also all of Jane Seville's Zero at the Bone, which has just the sort of professional hit man with scruples, maxillofacial surgeon in witness protection, dynamics that I like, and is also very strong on competent autonomous female characters. I accidentally read another 8% of Heidi Cullinan's The Seventh Veil, which looks like being secondary world fantasy that I actually like, and am now exhibiting willpower (or at least trying to save it until I've finished some of the others).

In other non-book related irritations, it is now just over eight months since the February earthquake and I'm still not back in my house (now also broken into, in addition to earthquake damage), nor do I know what will be happening with it long-term. Also, I would like Katy Perry, among others, to stop using ménage à trois under the mistaken apprehension that it is a classy way of saying threesome. Ménage means household, and refers to a more permanent arrangement. Personally, I always thought threesome was a classy way of saying threeway, but possibly that's just me. (Adam Lambert is on a warning. Meanwhile, I am also blaming the earthquakes for the fact that I now listen to a lot more commercial radio just because the announcers are on the same faultline as I am).
