how much the relationship between the goose girl and Falada, her horse, is central to that for me. Kingfisher is not fond of horses and Falada is not a friend, and my childhood self got deeply deeply enraged by all this. Maybe this would work better for me on a re-read when I can manage my expectations.
Eh. That might just be story-breaking. I know people can do it, but that doesn't mean it has to work.
