I agree that Kurtz often does more interesting things with her monarchy than other authors! The Bastard Prince spoke to me even more than King Javan's Year in that sequence, and it actually seems to have held up pretty well for me; I started flipping through it last year in preparation for getting rid of it (I've gotten rid of most of my Kurtz) and ended up shifting from skimming to full-on reading halfway through. It's still on my shelf.
