Wiki has just informed me it’s based (possibly v loosely!) on a Zelazny story I haven’t read. Also features Christopher Plummer and Max von Sydow.
Huh. Okay! I like both of these people who are occasionally in terrible movies.
Conversely I haven’t read the Elizabeth Hand! Must have a look for it.
It's a novella; I read it in her most recent collection Errantry (2012). It's more folkloric than Into the Dream, but there was a particular image of horror that nagged at me until I placed the echo.
