Last Call has a version of poker (Assumption) played with Tarot cards where, obviously, the hand you get symbolises your soul, and can be won or lost in the game... There's a lot of Tarot imagery worked into the story, implicit and explicit.

Tim Powers is one of those authors with a lot of YMMV as far as his books go - I didn't like Expiration Date and Declare at all, but a lot of other people (some of whom have perfectly sensible other opinions :) did. I think Last Call is the sort of book you'd either really like or not think much of at all, so it may not be worth re-visiting. Have you read much of his other stuff?
