Have you tried the 2005 telemovie with Imelda Staunton? We watched that recently and enjoyed it very much. (Which meant I reflexively grabbed the new one when I saw it, but a quick glance makes it not at all appealing.)

Also, I then tried to read Two in the Bush and found the narration off-putting. Maybe I should revisit one of his earlier ones.
